Happy Halloween

We had a great day, with our Halloween parade through the school and showing off our costumes and pumpkins. The class did some writing describing different monsters and shared with each other.  We even had a student demonstrate how to make paper penguins!

Have a safe night!

Artifacts and Assembly

We have spent the last 2 days examining artifacts from First Nations people.  Students have been recording what they observe, describing the items, explaining what they think the artifact is used for and what they wonder about it. Our class has also been doing some writing using a picture prompt of a First Nations settelement camp.  The students have come up with some great questions about what they wonder life was like back then.

Today we had a great presentation from Earth Rangers organization.  We learned about looking after the habitats and protecting animals in Canada.  Ask your child about the different animals they got to meet in real life!

Reminders for next week:
Library books are exchanged on Monday.
Halloween celebrations on Tuesday afternoon, see previous post about appropriate costumes, no masks, etc.  Feel free to send a second healthy snack for the afternoon.

Halloween Costumes

Next Tuesday afternoon we will be doing some activities including a costume parade around the school.   Students will only be dressing up if they choose to in the afternoon, not all day.  Please be aware of the following information for costumes:

Halloween costumes should not have masks (safety hazard), makeup (too complex for at school), weapons or be violent/inappropriate costumes (e.g. the clown from it, Freddy Kruger, etc.); save those kind costumes for the night.  Students can bring a second healthy snack for themselves for the afternoon learning fun, please do not send in candy or food to share.

Reminders-

-home reading is exchanged tomorrow
- popcorn is available for sale again tomorrow for $2.00

Tomorrow our class will start to examine one of the museum kits that our grade has ordered.  We will get the chance to examine First Nations artifacts, discuss what we think they were used for and work in groups.

Tuesday, October 24, 2017

Tomorrow and Thursday are popcorn treat days.  Send your child in with $2.00 and they may buy a bag of popcorn to enjoy.
In Science we are continuing our exploration of magnets and where we use magnets at home and in real life.  Help your child find some places in your house where magnets are used!

Safety, Popcorn and Field trips!

On Friday morning we had a great assembly about safety delivered by our school Constable.  Please talk to your child about what they learned about how to cross the street safely and see the information below.  He also reminded us of the importance of being safe driving and dropping your child off in a safe zone, not in the middle of the street.

How does Point-Pause-Proceed work?

  • POINT (extend your arm) at the crosswalk, keeping all five fingers fully extended.
  • PAUSE to look for traffic. Look in all directions. Make eye contact with drivers and wait until all vehicles have come to a complete stop.
  • PROCEED across the street, keeping your arm and fingers extended. Stay alert to potential dangers.
Please visit this website and discuss the video with your child: http://tsk.capsc.ca/?page_id=58

Library day is on Monday, please return your books.  Home reading is exchanged on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If your child forgets, they are still more than welcome to exchange books the next day.

Happy Thanksgiving

On Friday we had a great day building 3D models with marshmallows and toothpicks.  The students were very engaged and enjoyed trying to build different shapes.

This week in math we will be looking at the 100 chart, looking for patterns, odd and even numbers and other activities to help build our number sense.

In Langage Arts we are continuing to read to ourselves ( or to me!), reading to others as well as working in our literacy groups with the other classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

In Science we will continue our exploration of magnets by doing some different experiments in class.

Library book exchange day will now be on Wednesday morning for this week and next week.

Home Reading books may be exchanged Tuesdays and Thursdays at this time.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with their family and friends.

October 4 Update

This week seems to be flying by as  we approach Thanksgiving weekend.  We are learning about 3D shapes in math, looking at real life examples.  Have your child look through items at home to get some ideas, your pantry is a great place to look!

In Science we will be looking more into magnets this week.

In our Literacy block, we have divided students into different learning groups and they get to spend time with new peers and a differernt teacher working on skills to become stronger readers and writers.

See note below about collecting winter gear for others.
Reminder to sign up for fun lunch.

Mrs. Krahn

Dear Parents,

Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization with the goal of ensuring that every child from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has a warm winter coat to wear to school. 90% of donations come from schools. The jackets are then distributed to children in schools where there is a need. This year we are inviting our students and parents to participate in a coat drive for Jacket Racket.  They accept gently used warm winter coats, snow pants, hats and mittens for all ages. Often whole families are outfitted, so any size is welcome.
A box will be set up in the Embassy for collection from October 10, 2017 to October 24, 2017
We encourage you to generously support this worthy project.
It is a great opportunity to help students who may be less fortunate.
