Math and Makerspace

Today we were working on number talks during our math time.  We looked at some some pictures of blocks on the Smartboard and had to decide how many there were and then explain how we figured it out. Here are some examples of how the students were able to count the blocks without counting each one individually.  This helps when dealing with larger numbers and adding if they can view it in groups of 10, or see groups of 3 or doubles.

We also went to the makerspace before lunch and listened to a story about a young girl who was always asking questions and wanted to become a scientist.  The students then got to pick a challenge and try and build something specific.  Ask your child what they built and whether it worked the first time!

Valentines day is coming up soon.  I will be sending home a letter talking more about how we are celebrating this holiday and a list of student names if you choose to send Valentines.  As it states in the letter, please ensure there is one for every student.

Thanks,

Mrs. Krahn

Student Led Conferences/Book Fair

Tomorrow is our class opportunity to purchase books during school time.  We will be going to the learning commons after recess if anyone has brought money.  If not, feel free to drop in before or after your time in my class to check out the great selection of books.

Tomorrow is also our first round of student led conferences.  You should be booked now for a specific time to drop in with your child.  Your child will lead you around to different areas of the room to look, listen and learn what they have been working on.  The stations include: reading a book a their "just right" level and asking them questions about what they have read, looking at their writing journal, completing some math problems and checking out the art work we will complete by tomorrow.  There will be time to talk to me but this is not a formal sit down interview time.  Feel free to come with any questions you might have.

Looking forward to meeting with you all either on Thursday evening or Friday morning.

Thanks,

Mrs. Krahn

Fort Calgary

Yesterday we had a great trip to visit Fort Calgary.  Students learned about Calgary's past and how it was settled.  They got to build a log cabin together, learned about building materials and tools and many more things.  I was impressed with the thoughtful questions and answers our class had during the learning activities.  We were complimented by the staff about how caring and well behaved our students were from our school, they were  truly Ambassadors of Ken Taylor.
Thanks  to our 4 volunteers who came along and thanks to those who offered, we truly can't go on these trips without you!
