Scholastic book orders

Hello!  I have sent home the last round of Scholastic book orders for this year with your child today.  Orders are due next Tuesday December 5 and will be delivered early the following week in time for Christmas.

Today is Science we learned more about thermometers, how to read them and when we use them.  Ask your child if they can name 3 different places thermometers are used.
Our class is enjoying the music and movement activities in the gym each day and are looking forward to sharing some of their talent with you the last week of school.

In our writing we made a list of our writing goals.  They include the following important items:
- periods and proper punctuation at the end of every sentence
- use finger spaces between the letters and leave an empty line in case you need to make changes or add something
- Capitals at beginning of sentences, including the word "I"
- using more interesting details in your story
- check spelling by sounding it out, use dictionary or GUM (Guess, Underline, Move on)

In Social studies we are learning more about the Blackfoot people and how they lived.  We made tipi's and watched a video about Blackfoot Crossing, a great cultural center East of Calgary.

This month is sure flying by fast!

We have started to learn about Hot and Cold in Science this week.  So far we have discussed what we know and what we want to learn in this unit, watched a couple of short videos, read a book on Hot and Cold and did some writing.

In Math, we were learning how to make 10 (eg. 7+3=10, 6+4=10) and how to use that strategy when adding more than 2 digits together (eg. 7+ 5+3=).  Our class also used a number line when adding larger numbers up to 30.  Some students need more practice so we will continue the work next week.

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Fun Lunch
Next week- Popcorn will be on sale on November 28 and 29 for $2.00

Movie night is next Friday, Decemeber  1.

Reminders for the week

Today we talked about different strategies to use when adding numbers in math.  Ask your child if they can name a few they use.
In Social this week we continued the conversation and writing about life in the past when the pioneers came over from Europe and settled in the Prairies.
We finished our unit on Magnets in Science and will be starting our new unit next week on Hot and Cold.
For health we listened to a story about being shy/embarrassed or other strong emotions and how to deal with the "beast" that can take over ourselves.  We wrote about a time when we felt a strong negative emotion such as anger or anxiety and drew what we thought our beasts would look like. Then we continued the conversation about how to deal with those powerful emotions and to get under control by breathing or doing some yoga type poses.     vid.ly/3r1t4q  You can watch the first part of the video here.
Please ensure your child has the proper winter gear (boots, hat, gloves/mitts and a warm jacket) for recess time.  Several students still have not been bringing their hat or mitts and it is too cold to outside for that long without protection from the cold.

Have a great long weekend.

Remembrance Day

This week we have been talking about Peace and what it really means to us.  We did an art project in our visual journals using chalkboard paint, tracing a template and temepra paint.  All of the students were very engaged and eager to write what peace meant to them.  Our grade 2 students also worked hard learning their song for the assembly today and I was so proud of how well they all performed in front of such a large audience.  Ask your child to explan what peace means to them!
